Just wondering if I can stop an additional step in between but I've recently acquired on of these and just testing this before handing it over to my aunt.

I've got a movie file with DTS sound, its currently plugged into my HDMI monitor with built in speakers (for testing purposes) but when I play the file no sound comes out.

Now I tried playing a different file with Stereo sound and that works fine on my monitor (with sound)

I'm having to think I will have to convert my files to playback stereo only? For my anutie's setup the WD will be plugged into her LCD via HDMI. Of course its not going to play DTS sound but is there anything else I can do to make the WD play Stereo sound with movies that have dts sound?

do you have the standard wdtv 1 and not the 2 or live one?
the wdtv live downmixes to stereo if needed, but the older model does not.

You will have to convert to AC3

Dependant on what model you've got, go into settings and system (same screen as the one where you can chose what output mode/resolution to use). Hopefully there'll be an option there that will allow you to choose audio output mode, instead of digital, select stereo.

*Note this is based on a WDTV Live, so may or may not work on your unit*

You probably have it set to digital, and your monitor cannot decoder DTS audio, so you need to get the WDTV to do it. If it can do it, setting it to stereo rather than digital output (which is really intended for AV amps) should sort you out, as stereo means it will downmix everything to PCM 2.0
