Hi All,
Have a data server running 8 x Seagate ES2 1tb drives in RAID 10 and am considering upgrading drives to 3Tb WD reds as the Seagates are starting to fail regularly and they aren't available new any more.
I know in theory the reds are only rated up to 5 drives in an array, but I can't see them being too much of an issue and don't really want to pay the massive premium for the full enterprise equivalent?
I also find it odd that in our 10 bay Synology NAS devices Synology tested and approved the reds for use in those chassis. We have 3 x 10 bay NAS running the reds with no issues so far.
The installed LSI/3ware 9650 Raid card after the recent driver and firmware update I've applied, will support the 3 and 4Tb drives and once installed (one at a time) LSI support can provide a low level script I can run that will then resize the array to make use of the extra drive space. All non-destructively.....
Seems a bit of a no brainer to me....
What do you think!
Thanks,
E-I
