I would much rather buy the SSD, 40gb Intel drive than this and only a few more quid.

TBF i got one of these when they were new for £75 and it still runs my os fantastic. but you are right for few more £££ ssd will knock it into next week. in a bid to be constructive how about ocuk do a deal with 2 of these drives so you raid them in a deal of the week or something. That way ocuk can clear some stock and customer get a pretty decent raid set up?

An SSD is twice the cost, per gig. For some people who require more OS space than the average SSD buyer, but less money than average SSD buyer, these still fit a niche.

Does this one not come in a heatsink like the 150gb version?
But ya, with the new intel drive, its very debatable.
If you're trying to run a silent system, I hear (no pun intended) these are pretty noisy?
So bang for buck wise I think the SSDs will be better and probably more reliable.

Am I correct in saying the 74gb velociraptor is from the generation before the generation before the current one? (I thought it went 36/74gb then 150/300gb then 450/600) so how does this compare to a Samsung F3? the Raptor is more expensive than a 1tb F3 so is it faster enough to warrant paying the extra for 900gb less?

I never heard my VR and I have my pc really quiet. Can only just hear the case fans from 3 foot away..

These are better than the 'old' Raptors..

For myself I have a specific application in mind. Its a access database application that I run to migrate data records. No other users. It just takes forever. It was talking about 8 days to run on a Dual 2.4 Xeon, but recently tired it on a new PC (Intel i3 530/4GB/1TB 7,200 SATA disk) and its down to about 3 days. Its single threaded, cpu not being hit more than about 35% and its only using about 1.5gb of ram. But theres lots of short disk access going on. With the HD light flickering on/off every couple of seconds. I was thinking thats the next bottle neck, and wondering how to speed it up without spending a lot of money.
