WDTV Live firmware problem

I have received one of these today and am having a problem for which I would appreciate some help.
I am getting a loop of "new firmware found" prompts. When I first accepted the recommended update it installed but then reminded me again and does not allow me to use the player. I tried a number of times but it just loops back to the same prompt.
After a search I did a rollback to 1.03.49 which it installed, but it just returns to new firmware found 1.04.10.
Is there a way to get out of this loop, rollback to a reliable firmware or is the player no good.

When mine prompts for new firmware found then I can just navigate left and then traverse the menus in the normal manner without installing the upgrade.

Personally I am currently running firmware 1.02.x so i am prompted to upgrade to 1.03.x each time I use it, but firmwares 1.03 and 1.04 don't play back .mkv's properly for me.

Are you certain the loop isn't it simply doing a stepwise update, and the loop continues as it is still progressing along the steps?
AFAIK it doesn't update in one go to the most recent version, but pastes major updates over each other and thus needs time to progress along the chain.
