We need a new DX 10 mid range king!

I've said it before but...

6600GT > 9800 Pro
7600GT > 6800 Ultra

So why isn't the 8600GT > 7900GTX?

It's just plain odd, nVidia have always brought out mid-range cards that trounce the generation before.

Personally I think it's just greed, they're making anyone who wants performance shell out for an 8800. And if you have a big screen, you'll need the 640MB version too.

^ I've been banging on about this for a while too. Everyone is comparing it to the X1950pro when in fact it should really be compared to the x1950xtx like with the last two generations of cards.

I think most people compare it to the X1950Pro and 7900GT because it's closest performing to those two cards.

Of course, all this means is that it's too slow and too expensive.

Whilst i agree that the performance of the 8600 GTS is below expectation, looking at the benchies the 8600 GTS performs about the same, or a little slower than a 7900 GT. This means that.

8600 GTS = 7800 GTX which is still technically a generation ago top model.

Of course, i had high hopes that the 8600 GTS would be on par with a 7950gt or x1900xt, but that was after hearing rumours of it having 48 stream processors...

Dont think id class the 8600 as mid range, its more like budget. 8800 GTS is more mid range imo
