In the 'current climate' I'm clicking on articles on sites that I wouldn't normally visit. Invariably you get this great big popup that takes over half the screen that you have to click on to access the site.

This bugs me, if they really valued your privacy they wouldn't be utilising cookies that necessitated this message, especially for sites where you simply read articles etc.

Is anyone like me... they see this and 'nope' out the website or is everyone clicking on consent and living their lives?

;)

I tend to nope most, unless i can op out with ease. Though realistically it probably doesn't make any difference. Though, i guess it's more of a principle thing otherwise i'd not feel like putting in the effort, i guess?

[Edit]

We (see) value in your privacy.

Isn't this because of EU regulations forcing them to do it?

Forcing them to show you all the tracking cookies, profiling and advertising they are doing. The EU are not forcing them to do all that stuff in the first place. If you run any sort of adblocker/tracker blocker, some websites will load hundreds of first/third party tracking cookies.

If they really wanted to protect people they would have stopped websites being able to track people altogether, they basically gave corporations like Google/Facebook the green light to do as they please so long as they get consent (which is likely embedded in account T&C's for those services) while making it look like they are protecting privacy.

Nearly every website you visit has some sort of Facebook/Google tracker embedded, hell even this forum is trying to connect to Twitter.

You get different types of cookies, functional (session and load balancing), as well as analytics and ‘tracking’.

Under GDPR and PECR you must give data subjects a positive opt in for cookies and the option to disable them except for those that are intrinsic to the function of the website. Your IP address is considered to be personal identifiable information such as name, address and date of birth etc.

It is a bit of a pest, I’m not fussed either way. Particularly given use of a VPN etc.

I find it annoying when you get asked every time you visit the same site and the default is 'accept all', then you click more options and they have all the rejected stuff from last time pre-filled. If they know what you wanted previously then don't ******* ask again!

If you’ve selected to turn off the cookies, how would they know it was you returning again?

On a related note. I enjoy sites that ask me to whitelist them on my adblocker, and then when I do so the equivalent of nine nebulas hell appears all over my screen and i can't see the information I was interested in any more.

Nope.

They're lying, of course. You are their product. They don't give a damn about your privacy, but they think it's useful to lie about that.

I will click on consent unless I think the site is particularly suspect because my system is set up to care a bit about privacy. I'm using a VPN, so my public-facing IP address and location are fake and change frequently. My browser is sandboxed. All cookies are deleted if not used for 30 seconds. All cookies are deleted when I close the browser. All cookies set by a page are deleted when I close the tab for that page. I don't have a browser history at all - that function is disabled. My browser itself has no telemetry to anywhere.

Of course I know they'll still be tracking me as much as possible, probably through browser fingerprinting. But I'm just a boringly ordinary user with a slight care for privacy and security, so that much will do. It's not like I'm a whistleblower or secret agent of some kind who needs serious security.

Nope.

I get that and I'm not actually using an adblocker. I'm using a security plugin that blocks most ads as a side effect because most ads are served in an insecure way. But I'd probably use an adblocker if I didn't use that security plugin because far too many sites have advertising that blights the functionality of the site to such an extent it makes the site impractical to use even when the ads aren't serving you malware on the side.

I have cookies turned off. If the website doesn't work without them, then I leave unless it's a website I really need to use.

And how do you achieve these things?
What Browser do you use?
What settings have you altered in that browser?
What VPN do you use?

Go on then, share the details of your strategy, help people stay safe and protect their privacy ;)
