Hey hey

I started playing 5aside football again last month (im 26) after about a year out.

My fitness is a issue and im struggling to get up and down for the full hour so I have joined back and the gym and am attempting to get into shape.....its harder than I thought!!

I went to the gym on Monday after work and spent some time on the cross trainer and the bike, while on the cross trainer I felt a kind of discomfort in my ankle, since then I have had a strange pain in my ankle, it kind of feels like my ankle has lost strength and is about to tear or something. The pain itself is very hard to explain its a funny kind of pain, it feels like there is an itch I cannot get to and when I walk it feels weak....

I have a history of ankle problems going back to when I was about 15, I have sprained my ankle and tore my ligaments, the ligament damage lasted a long time, its something that could just go on me any time I was playing football.

I am due to play again on Friday night and was contemplating going to the gym tonight to do a light work out......what do you guys think I should do? should I give the gym a miss tonight or do some work on the ankle? I need to play on Friday but I also do not want to cause any long term damage.

Thanks

I would say you need to take at least 2 weeks off as playing could make it worse, and put ice packs on it to prevent swelling, this site has a bit of basic info & ankle guards that may be of use to you:

Unlucky that you cant play but im sure you'll enjoy watching from the bench :)

Thanks for this.....If I go and sit on the bench I will end up playing, problem is there is no one to take my spot.

Thanks for all the advice peeps, I will give the gym a miss tonight then I think :)

Get to the docs to get a scan booked, he/she may/may not be able to book your to a physio.

Ive torn ligaments in both my ankles (seperate times) the first time i just thought it was a sprain but it ended up id chipped bone and then had calcifacation.

Cant beat a trip to your GP he/she can then point you in the right direction.

Or you can always go straight down to a&e when its not busy!

Yeah, again thanks for the advice.

Im not in a great deal of pain, nothing like the pain I remember when I torn the ligaments. I am always a little cautious of wasting the docs time if its not serious but I take in what you are saying and I will try and get in.

The thing is (as you prob already know tbh) it might not be torn but playing on a weak ankle is most likely to cause it to tear. Its not worth the risk of playing 40mins or whatever tbh. I learnt that the stupid way by playing on :(
