Web-based media server?

Hi guys

My home server has some remotely accessible functionality - FTP, owncloud etc... but I've realised it might be useful for me to be able to stream video/audio directly from the server through a web interface. Like my own personal youtube.

On my home network this is fine, I just add a share to the server and play it directly, or use UPnP or whatever to stream it to my TV/XBMC frontent. But I'd like to be able to view it remotely. Bandwidth isn't an issue as I'm on Unlimited Fibre, so as long as I don't take the **** I should be fine with an occasional film, but I can't find a simple-ish solution to do it.

It doesn't quite work through FTP - AVI tries to download, while MKV will stream but doesn't seem to have sound. Similarly OwnCloud isn't ideal because, while I can use it for music, it doesn't work for video. I also don't want it to try to sync all my music and video to every machine I sync with OwnCloud.

Other than just pulling the whole file over FTP, is there a way I can stream the files easily? Am I just missing an obvious project? All I need is a way to browse the files (ideally with a login) and play them in the browser. Playlists and more advanced features would be lovely, but I can live without them.

Thanks

Plex has a web interface you can play through as well as fat clients for Windows/OSX and pay clients for iOS/Android. Can be a bit of work to setup but once working it can be quite good.

Hmm, I've set Plex up - not totally convinced by the security (LAN = open, WAN = secure, in theory) but it seems to work nicely and setup was stupidly quick. I'll have a play, thanks :)

I tried OMV a while ago - it worked nicely on the local network as a NAS, but I was never convinced about it's remote working capability or media prowess.

I'm enjoying Plex, though - I'm even tempted to swap my XBMC frontent for the Plex Home Theater kit (based on XBMC), as Plex's library management and content matching is excellent. It's just a shame there's no Spotify or Twitch.tv plugin I can find for Plex, as I use both heavily on XBMC.

It might be time to dig out the Raspberry Pi for either XBMC or Plex front-end duties.

But yeah, great call with Plex, thanks.

Mediaportal can now stream to a webbrowser, i use it all the time. You may need to setup port forwarding to use out side your home network. It also allows you to set recordings and watch recorded programs.

MediaPortal will also act as back end for XBMC.
