Web Browser Choice

you can customise FF to look and work like Chrome, but I really can't be arsed, so... I'm using Chrome :p

of course Firefox+noscript is there for exploring the web, but for sites I trust and regularly use (bbc, ocuk, etc), I don't think there's much wrong with Chrome. inability to block ads does get annoying.

funnily enough, this is the first time I've had two browsers installed and use both regularly. before it was FF for everything, and before that, IE for everything.

I'm an avid FF user.. love the add-ons and use many of them regularly. I use FF on linux/windows and really does do everything I require of a browser.

Having said this a lot of my friends have recommended trying Chrome, so I may just have a go just for a comparison (and to see how true these claims are that it is quicker). Although seems a tad pointless given FF does everything I require.

The new version of Opera ( 10.5) is just as faster and in some cases faster than Chrome

Oh really?... I haven't used Opera in many years and last time I tried it (probably around 4/5 years ago!) it seemed quite bloated and slow. But may give it another shot in that case!

FF all the way, I was always under the idea IE was more of a hackers choice and spam due to all the average joes using it..

4/5 years ago  I don't use Intel as the last time i tried them their Pentium 4's were slower then AMD's Athlons 64's

The big winner will be Chrome as most people see google as the web. It already has a massive following in the non technical group too...

This is my feeling as well - only Chrome can benefit from the browser ballot. The only people who'll be influenced by it are non-techies. Half of them will stick with IE anyway. The other half will go for the name they recognise/trust - in some cases it might be Firefox, but Google's is by far the most recognisable logo on the web and that will swing a lot of people.

Opera caused the hoo-hah that led to this, but their browser will stay just as anonymous as before. They have some major lessons to learn from Mozilla on marketing on a small budget.

Not true - IE8 on Vista/7 is the most secure browser due to protected mode. (Whether that's enough to counteract the horrendous user interface is another matter...)

IE8 user and proud. ;)

Same. I hate FF with a passion, it's damn slow to load up and has no real benefit over IE (except for plugins, which I don't use except an exif reader that is available for IE). It also has a fugly UI by default.

More because it has the majority of the market. If FF (or any other browser for that matter) become dominant the hackers will start developing for that browser more instead. Why spend time writing an exploit for a minor browser when you can catch far more people by writing for the most popular (this is essentially the same as mac/windows, why write a virus for an OS that only 8% of people use when you can write one for an OS that 80+% of people use).

Surprised at the lack of Opera love, apart from the internet browsing itself, which I really don't notice much difference between any of the others, I find the built in capabilities such as Opera Unite, the ability to synchronise all my bookmarks and the speed dial to be very useful.

Of course, maybe FF has a plugin for all of the above but it's all just there with Opera and doesn't break with every update.

IE was the hackers choice because it was insecure and it allowed the execution of so much code it was dangerous. We're talking IE6 here though things have gotten a lot better since then with activex controls and UAC governing IE7+ there is no real hackers choice anymore.

Opera seems to have the least to offer browser wise, if you're an idiot you use IE, if you love to customize your browser use firefox, if you love google and buy their hype use chrome, if you're a mac lover use safari, opera really doesn't have a big name or a big reason behind it.

Well yeah, I was sort of talking about IE7 and 8, anyone still using IE6 should be shot... Doesn't change the act that most hackers will always go for the majority software (unless there is another that is rediculously easy to "hack").

How can you compare Firefox's smart navigation bar to IE's and say it isn't a benefit? It's worlds apart.

Smart navigation bar?

That the thing that comes up with suggestions for websites? I turned that off as I don't care about it.

I prefer a minimalist Browser, one that has back, forwards, address bar, refresh and favourites. No extra bumf or words at the top, tat at the sides etc and I find IE the best for that.

The thing I notice most on the occasion I've used newer IEs is all the icons and UI elements splattered all over the place.

The browser of "choice" should always be the one that offers you the most choice - no? ;)

I have all 4 browsers installed and IMO Firefox, with all its choice, offers the most professional look and feel while Chrome follows closely behind for looking for user friendly and pleasing due to the pleasant colour shades and animations (due to be seen in Firefox 4 btw) of blue in the first instance.

Also the caption for Firefox on the ballot screen reads "Your online security is Firefox's top priority..." I don't know about anyone else but if I was Average Joe that opening line alone would sway me toward Firefox compared to the other captions.

Tried them all before.

FF offers me nothing over IE that i'd use, Chrome just looks and feels too plain and basic, Safari I found to be quite slow, and Opera was half decent but again, offered me nothing over IE.

If IE was to stop working then yes, i'd switch. But i'm not going to do it simply to be one of the sheep that thinks Microsoft oozes pure evil from every pore.

I've wondering about this option since installing the update on multiple pc's, but I have never been prompted to choose a browser or seen this icon

Does the Browser Choice only appear if IE is the only browser on your pc?

FF offers me nothing over IE that i'd use
Not even this?

Personally since finding that addon, i cannot live without it. I hate having tabs along the top, which if you get too many, become unreadable.... plus all that scrolling back and forth!
