Web design good practice

Does anyone have any links to resources that discuss good design practice for websites? I've found some useful info on sitepoint but does anyone have any others?

I guess sites like bbc.co.uk, google and ebay are also good sites to look at?

I copied some of the techniques on that site. Used a spalsh screen, put some good flashing gifs in there, used lots of bright colours and designed my site for viewing at 1920x1080 and now it looks pap! Where did I go wrong?!
