Web-Design, how to achieve shaded boarders?

How do i achieve the shaded effect around the edges of my div's?

To the left/right of the main body div on the outer side they are using a shaded effect presumably from an image created in photoshop. Is there any guides I can use online to learn how to do this?

Gradient tool I would imagine.

But how do you actually create the image with the gradiant effect then apply it within your style sheet? what element does it get attached to?
