Hi all

I've just graduated (well waiting for results) doing computer science and I've taken a liking to web development. A friend of the family wants me to create a website for them - not much to it - couple of pages, no scripting etc.

Just wondering how much to charge for doing something like that?

I'll have to set up the domain and design it etc.

Any ideas? I don't want to over/under charge

Thanks guys

First thing to do is to price out how much the domain and hosting is going to cost you, if you aren't going to host it yourself, since this will be pretty much be the first expense you/your friend will have to pay and there are a lot of good sites out there so just google for hosting companies.

Secondly, I would make a plan of how long it's going to take you to complete the task by going through each of the steps required to complete the website, writing them down then estimating how many £/per hour is reasonable, again Google is your friend.

It's also not a bad idea to throw a ball park figure at the guy and see if you can negotiate a reasonable rate, since he is a friend.

That's my two cents, feel free anyone else to chip in.

It's vague generally I just go by what I feel is a decent amount/what I want to earn from it: I wouldn't charge a friend as much as an unknown business for example. Equally I'd charge more if I was also working full-time than if it was my sole income because it wouldn't be needed as much/wouldn't be worth my time.

Thanks for the replies - the thing is I don't know what a decent amount is. I've looked at hosting and I've used dream host (well using) before and am familiar with them. Does £70 seem reasonable to host a domain and register a .com?

Then charging per hour a set rate... what would you charge someone you know? Taking into account registering and setting up everything, designing layout/colour etc, adding content (seo stuff) will take x amount of hours.

Hmm!

If its your first one you could always just get them to pay for hosting and domain and do it for free. You'll get the learning experience as well as something to put in a portfolio to help get other work.

Just thought I'd throw that in there :D

i dont think anyone would expect a website to cost less than £300/400

throw in the domain and the hosting and your away

just my 2p

The amount you charge should be very dependent on how good you are. If you're really new and will produce something... not very nice, then free or very low priced. If you're already very good at design and the principles behind it, then you can charge more.

^ spot on.

I would work out an hourly rate which you feel comfortable charging based on how good you are/experience etc. Then plan out how long you will spend on the website e.g. 2 hours per page.
