I am looking at hosting packages for my new site and to be honest, i don't really have any idea of the kind of level of hosting i would require. I think a dedicated server would be the best idea however i am sure this would be over kill so i have been considering VPS/Cloud hosting.

The main issue is that i will be sending out a lot of emails, somewhere in the region of 500,000 a year. Because of this at my current firm we change IP every 3 months or so just to avoid the inevitable spam traps. Although all of the mail is solicited we have encountered a number of issues in the past.

I will be hosting 2-4 sites and will be looking to expand in the coming years. I am also considering splitting the cost with a friend that is also starting a small e-commerce site.

i am just looking for some basic guidance on what would be the best option/specification and maybe some indication on cost or provider.

Good luck with that, hosting providers have belatedly worked out that people who do bulk mailing aren't worth the hassle, too many blacklistings and too much admin time as a result eats away at profit on the budget £100 a month boxes.

Also, many of the cheap providers have such bad IP reputation that you'll have difficult sending email reliably to major providers.

You should farm out your bulk mailing to a specialist provider and do the rest separately for safety reasons anyway. You buy a single server and I get a bunch of complaints about UCE/UBE then I'd pull the plug, if everything is on the same box then there goes your website and personal mail account too.
