Web Parts and some good resources

Well I am after some help with developing web parts for c# and aspx.

My experience of web parts is virtually zero and i thought it may be time for me to look at this to see how, if possible they can enhance a site.

Now I have only about 8 months experience with web development at a personal and professional level but I feel that I am now ready to learn this as well after becoming more confident with the basics and would consider myself more that capable of taking on this challange.

Now I know there are many knowledgable people in here so I was wondering if anyone has any tips or hints on where I can find some good resources or even any books that may be off use.

Also is it worth using web parts at all, or are there any better ways of getting the same things done.

The reason I ask is that I have decided that our company intranet needs sprucing up as it was built a few years ago and really isn't fit for purpose now. So my intention is to have a layout like this:

now as I am still fairly new to web development I have put borders around all my div's just so that I know how they look and if my positioning is correctly as this is still at the design stage I haven't added any fancy graphics but I will leave that to someone else to do for me as although I have ideas I can't seem to get them out on the screen properly.

so any thoughts on my layout design choice is there something fundementally wrong with it?

I have developed this site so far using masterpages and css. My intention is to populate the web part sections with xml feeds using xslt from my sql database.

Look forward to hearing your thoughts.

Unless you want to develop your intranet site for the programming experience I would recommend looking at SharePoint.

We use MOSS at work and it is very powerful and customisable, I havn't used the free SharePoint Services product but I believe it is almost as good as MOSS, it might provide a useful starting point for your intranet site that you could extend with your own web parts if needed.

i did look at sharepoint as a solution to this as I know it does pretty much what I want and with the 2007 stuff such as excel services it would be extremely useful. But I think tackling a problem like this will help me a lot in understanding how to develop web parts and also develop my existing and relatively young web app skills so that I can become a more confident programmer. In the short time that I have been in the development side of my role I have progressed a lot but I still feel I have another 12 months at least before I can say I will be happy with my skills as a full time developer.

With these additional skills I think it will also make me a more rounded web developer although I prefer developing desktop apps I think these sort of skills will help in developing more web enabled applications which hopefully will help me in gaining the MCPD or MCAD type certificate.
