Hi all,

I'm after a little advice as to how to take a little project forward. I am involved in a non profit association which has about 1200 members. We have limited web presence and to be honest apart from the members not many people would be interested in us..

We have limited web presence, with a simple web site done with google sites.

I've recently become involved with association and am looking at updating the site. This would be the requirment:

About 8 - 10 pages (we've already got the content)
Seperate 'members' only section
A section for documents to be stored and downloaded from
A members bulletin board

We need email set up for about 10 - 15 people

We need the ability to publish bulletins and documents
We need the ability to update the general content of the site

We already own a domain name and have hosting for it.

I think in terms of complexity of the site and having to be all singing and dancing, so long as it matches our corporate look (which is a bit dull!) it does not need to be that flash...

What do you think the best way of getting this work done is? We've got no one in house to do it, and none of our members can do the work either.

Is this some thinj a keen amature would do, or would this have to be done by a 'web specialist firm.

What do you think the costs would be, for a firm and an individual.

Thats for taking the time to read this.

Hi there,

This is something fairly simple that could be done by either an amateur or a business. Depending on who you have it hosted with, setting up e-mail and the bulletin board will be fairly easy.

Making your site into a dynamic Wordpress environment would allow for easy updating, uploading, and having bulletin boards once logged in.

In terms of design, and cost, this would all be done at an hourly rate, I assume, which varies from person to person. A web firm would probably give you a quote per page. It's not an extremely difficult request, however, and anyone familiar with Wordpress should be able to get it set up for you.

As above agencies vary wildly in price depending on a number of things. How fancy their offices are, reputation, how busy they are and if they want to do the project etc..

It is definitely something a good amateur could do.

A lot would depend on your host as to how best to go forward, for example what technologies they use on their servers. Choosing the right developer/agency is a huge topic and shouldn't just be chosen on price. Finding someone who you can relate to and seems to understand your project is worth something extra as the end result will be better.
