Hi,

Looking for some ideas on the general cost for web site support, this includes routine maintenance and minor development work (updating site content).

What would be the sort of hourly rate associated with this line of work, an average would be fine although the min/max that could be charged would be even better.

It depends on the client and the type of work involved for me. I'd usually say minimum £25 an hour, maximum £75 an hour, with a minimum charge of one hour.

So if i were to charge £25/hour they would be unlikely to find cheaper, the site itself is based on a propriety software package that I know inside out having worked with it for the past 3 years. As funding for the project is due to end there is a chance that the will want work carried out still but on a per hour basis rather than the currently contracted/salaried time I do.

Thankfully there are very few people in the UK who know the package that well so I essentially have them by the balls.

If that's the case, I would certainly charge them more than £25/hr.

However, if you're worried they may find someone else, you could maybe come up with some kind of rate plan. As an example:
- Up to x number of hours/month @ £50/hr.
- Anything over that amount is billed @ £25/hr.
Also, be sure to put a clause in which clearly states that these rates would not apply for something like a complete redesign or similar.
