Are there any good sites on this,

checking the fluids and changing tires is easy enough but anything more than that and i just wouldn't risk it because i don't know what im doing ill lump for paying someone else instead

some of the kind of things im talking about

changing break pads/disks
doing an oil change
changing suspension
changing an exhaust
changing a head gasket

im sure there are plenty of folk here who could do all of the above but i feel my knowledge of it all is a bit lacking and i see all of the above as being fairly standard jobs that would pretty much apply to most cars, i just wouldn't mind knowing how to do it safely, what tools would be needed, and where necessary what should be done to reseal everything up correctly

Nice learning curve you have their mate.
Simple brake pad change, then an oil change and then lets whip the cylinder head of give it a quick skim before slapping on a new gasket and rebuilding the top of the engine :D All done on a nice sunny sunday afternoon. :D

Although those jobs may be similar on different cars, they are also different in a few ways, which is why a Haynes manual or other specific guide is a lot better. Especially when it comes to what tools are needed or torque figures etc.

Haynes manaul..

Replacing head gasket is easy depending on engine..

Gone are the days of rebuilding 50cc engines though :(.. They where easy could have it stripped down and rebuilt within a couple of hours.

You are probably better off finding a good forum that caters for your make/model of car. There are some good ones out there, and their members can be very very helpful. :)
