Make of it what you will. Quite interesting how he Dietrich says :

"He would be a very bad racer had he not tried to attack and gain a position."

So what does that make the Team Principal for demanding him not to?

Red Lull

Red Bull owner Dietrich Mateschitz says there are absolutely no doubts that Mark Webber will stay with the outfit next year, even after the team orders controversy.

The team was involved in a row after asking Webber to 'maintain the gap' when fighting for second place with team-mate Sebastian Vettel in the latter stages of the British Grand Prix.

Webber admitted after the race that he had ignored the orders and that he was not happy about them.

Despite the row, Mateschitz says Webber will get a new deal.

"Mark Webber will re-sign with us," Mateschitz told AUTOSPORT. "This will happen for sure. He is very popular within the team, he feels very comfortable and it is an excellent relationship. He knows this and we know it.

"To be honest, Mark has no better choice than the fastest car and we have no better choice for a fast driver."

The Red Bull boss also admitted he was fine with Webber having tried to overtake Vettel despite the order given to him.

"This is no problem for us," Mateschitz said. "Sebastian realised that Fernando Alonso was gone and could not be caught anymore, so he backed down. This let Mark close in. He would be a very bad racer had he not tried to attack and gain a position."

i dont think vettel backed down i think webber was just faster.

and if i was webber i would prob look elseware unless he is happy playing the barichello role. even if he goes to a slower team he can race and not be told to "maintain the gap".

Would be good to see him go to another team, a team he might feel more appreciated at, perhaps Renault next season if Kubica can't make it back.
It'd also be interesting there being an open seat at RBR.

Though I get the feeling Webber may retire if he doesn't stay at Red Bull.

Webber stays at Red Bull or he retires. What are his other options? He moves to another team with a slower car - no chance of challenging for the title. He moves to another team and becomes number two driver behind somebody else - no chance of challenging for the title.

He needs to stay where he is and get ahead of Vettel right from the start of the season and make the team work for him, not Vettel.

With Vettel being a double world champion? Never going to happen IMO. Even if he stays and starts with a few wins next season, it'll always be Vettel who gets the bigger say on car development, and who gets the new parts first.

Webber is doomed to second fiddle as long as he's at RBR now :(

He's doomed as long as RBR's current bout of domination lasts.

In exactly the same way ferrari dominated the 90s, it looks as though RBR are now going to dominate this decade.

Until that ends and he can get a competitive drive somewhere else, he's never going to be world champion.

Webber blew his chance in 2010 with lacklustre finishes despite near-100% reliability. That said, he's been far more consistent this year (no retirements, 3rd for the third straight race now) and I think the order last weekend to keep him behind Vettel was pointless. He's done a lot more passing from the midfield too...

Oh I agree - I didn't say it was going to happen, just that it's his only viable option. Unless Red Bull's fortunes take a nose-dive due to a regulation change, reliability problems etc and Mark rides it out better than Vettel, he's on to a loser. But if he jumps ship he's either going to be number 2 somewhere else or number 1 in a midfield team (if either option were even available, which looks doubtful)
