a friend has a usb webcam and worked fine for ages but then started playing up and needed to be unplugged and back in again or restarting her laptop, now it's really kicking off and hardly ever works, nothing has changed, we've tried reinstalling the drivers and been to website for newest ones. Her usb's are working fine with ipod etc so it's not a fault there. Could the cam just be broken?

Any help appreciated

Very possible. Webcams are generally made for cheapness rather than performance or longevity. What make and model is it? I see it's used with a laptop, am I right to assume it's been packed away regularly? If the cable is regularly folded or wrapped around it can degrade.

it's a logitec cam but no box so not sure about the model, yeah it's packed into a laptop bag that never moves only 2 take out the laptop, she's very careful not 2 bend the wires near the connections. it's not wrapped around the cam, just in a large loop so not to strain it

Is the webcam plugged in/out regulary, maybe the usb connector is worn/damaged.

I had these problems you describe with a mouse i had, it kept making the laser switch off.
