It depends on what you want the site to do and what features you will need. There is no one size fits all, unfortunately.
Wordpress is good at what it does, but the simplicity, ease of use, expandability (plugins) can be it's biggest downfall and slow the site down in a big way. Some of the plugins are poorly coded and not optimised. Which can lead to problems with your host if you are on shared hosting.
There are systems out there for free which come with all the bells and whistles you need a big bunch of plugins to make wordpress do. Things like modx cms, xoops, Drupal, and impress. All have there good and bad points. Spend a little time looking at the options before making that final decision.
I know there will be another bunch of Wordpress posts that follow but my advice after 13 years doing this stuff is look at those mentioned above first then if you feel wordpress is right for your site then go with it.
