I am designing my site - its my first time. What do you think of this? ie Layout/look. (The search box - I will change)

Its intentionally quite simple, but something is 'missing' I think. Dont worry you can slate it as much as you like, I dont mind! What do you think I could do to improve it?? Logos - pretty weak?? (The name wont be that)

Any input at all would be really appreciated - thanks guys:)

No offence, but it looks like one of those domain name park/search engine pages.

I don't like much of it, the strapline at the top clashes with the rest of the site. The logo doesn't make sense, wouldn't funky muffin have a muffin in it or something. Not lard on toast.

I'm not even sure what the site does by looking at it for 5 minutes solid, and that isn't a good sign at all. At a guess, something to do with advertisements and maps?

No offence taken!:) Its my first attempt anyway. Comparison to "domain name park/search engine pages" makes me quite concerned! However probably justified.

The logos etc I whipped up pretty quickly and I no theres isnt much relation to the toast! For some reason I quite like that toast bit, I want it in the logo.

Bascially its supposed to be something similar to www.london.craigslist.org or www.gumtree.com but look simpler and better.. The backend work is pretty much done/being finished its just the layout I am struggling with. :o

So would you say the biggest problem are the logo/masthead?

Craigslist is successful because people know what it is. Your site, I'm sorry to say, looks like a spammy site...you at least need to put some content in it, not a whacking great blob of white space with some links related to london in it. That's one of the first things a visitor would see, and they'd be as confused as me :)

I aim to put some more content on there but I just wanted a simple design. I agree looking at it does look like a spammy site - it basically does the same thing as craigslist but I need it to look at least acceptable, and get clever with the marketing..

What do you think of the general layout? Is it salvagable!?

I have changed the site a small amount - www.thetubist.com

I think the only bad part now is the banner at the top, I just cant think what to do with it as its necessary to have some description of what it is.

Is the animation too much? (on the logo)

ps - the questions section is not finished.

still think it needs a bit more colour and shape to it, I bet if you view that design on a larger screen it'll look lost.

My advise would be for you to have a look around the net on some of the web design sites , get inspiration and ideas and try and add them in a unique way to your site.

Your never going to get it right first time , it's all about experimenting and trying new things at the moment your playing it a little too safe and its not working.

Constructive crit./ No offence intended.

( Viewed on 17" lcd @ 1280x1024 )

The logo is not animated ( viewed on firefox and IE ) ? EDIT Sorry it does animate , but it happens so quickly i missed it first time , Either loop it or i wouldn't bother.

The logo is very pixelated and unclear/scruffy. EDIT Over-optimised (was the phrase i was looking for ;) )

Maybe put a black stroke around the lettering on the masthead. and increase the size of the masthead , it looks like its floating away from the sub headings.

Personally I don't like the olivey? colour behind the subheadings i.e housing , for sale..etc.

Just my thoughts , Keep at it. :)

Cheers,

Mark

Thanks guys, I really appreciate the feedback.:) And no offence taken whatsoever

Gman - I think you are right, for some reason its not working - theres something missing.

mrdbristol - The animated logo is now up, but yes I need to get it sorted for its over optimisation;) - I need to resize it in photoshop. Cheers, really helpful tips you gave.:)
