Hi all,

I have been asked to change the DNS settings for our website, I know this can take anywhere from 24-72 hours.

My query is once I have changed the DNS settings, what happens to the users who have not get propagated, do they see an error when attempting to view the website? :o

The maximum time it will take is the TTL time set on the DNS entry.

I typically put this at 12 hours, 72 is excessive unless the data changes very rarely.

It's not down to whether a user doesn't get propagated, it's down to what server they use to handle their DNS requests. Any user that is using a DNS server that knows nothing about your domain will usually query the root nameserver, which holds the new data. For these people the address will change instantly.

Only people who are querying a DNS server which hold the old IP address in cache will recieve the old IP address. They will start using the new IP address as soon as the cache expires which is determined by TTL, at which time that DNS server will query the root nameserver and get the updated address.
