Behind you... Naked!
Ok, I weill try to make this as simple as I can.

my brothers website has been changed from BT residential, to a BT Business
The domain name was setup by myself some years ago but I have had to release it to BTNAMES and BT have taken it over.
The snag is that now it does not work with the www in front of it.

Try it for yourself

www.northwales-cases.co.uk - If just hangs there

northwales-cases.co.uk - now it opens up fine.

BT say there is nothign wrong, but its clearly a DNS issue isnt it?

Does anyone know WTF we can do about it?

Different addresses ? Hmm....

Control Panel. Yes, I am trying to find out if I can get any info on such a thing so I can have a shufty myself, but I am hitting brick walls.

I myself get no info.
My brother does not seem to be able to relay any info I give him or they give him and back to me.
So, you are kind of at the back of a line of chinese whispers ( Not trying to sound racist ) and so...

Ok, cheers for this, I might have a bit more to go on.

What you might be able to do is transfer the domain to a real hosting provider but don't forget to take a backup of the website so you could transfer it to your new host.

There are a few providers that cost around £20.00 a year which is fantastic.

Yeah, thats on the cards.

This is what happened ( Cant remember dates but here goes )

I hosted the files on my webspace.
I used 1&1 to buy his domain name
I then pointed the name to a folder in my website

Worked great, but then he started to get hacked.
This did NOT affect the rest of my files, only what was in his folder.

But, being a moaning git like my brother is, he said that was no good and could I do it some other way?

I asked him and he said he was with BT and so I said that they do have webspace and that he could use that, and all I need do, is point his domain name to his BT location instead!

This worked great too

I keep the master files on my PC and simply upload whenever he needs any changes.

Now, a few weeks ago, BT said they wont host in anymore. I said I could go back to my way and it will be easy as pie, but he wanted BT so he went BT business instead.

Now, in order for us to go BT business, they took the domain name and everything.

We can still FTP the files to/from the site as you can tell, but they have the control of the domain name.

IMy brother has NOT been able to access his site, nor has a load of his customers and potential customers... I told him to avoid the www but hey... sometimes even that is too much for some.

Now, BT say that in order to move away from them, he must pay a cancelation fee!

My arguement on this, is that they have not so far been able to actually give him a fully working domain have they?

Like I said, its not the cost. I can host the files myself for him. Its that he is now tied in with BT and they wont let him go.

It can't be that hard to get even BT to correct a simple DNS configuration problem. They've always been pretty helpful with rDNS requests and the like.

Have you checked that if there's a DNS management interface such as this you can access?

Failing that just ring and tell them that you're your brother to cut out the middleman.

But its not the name only though is it?
the website works but only if you DONT use the WWW
So, even if I point the name to another site, it wont solve the problem.

Although Ringing them is certainly something that I am going to have to do.

The IP address 216.21.224.203 (for www.northwales-cases.co.uk) is one of Register.com's addresses, who also appear to hold the name servers for this domain.

I'm not sure who Register.com are, or how they relate to BT, but as the domain is being held on their name servers you'd need to change the A record or CNAME with them.

Interesting.

I have used my brothers login for this MYOFFICE rubbish ( Which gives me much the same info as there is in that link ) but it did NOT accept his details.

I could perhaps try contacting them though.

Last night, I did use the MYOFFICE pages and I did change the CNAME but it did also say the changes will be made within 48 hours and so I am also waiting on that.

Thanks guys, I am taking it all in I promise, but I am also workign stoopid hours too, plus getting hold of my brother etc...

Ok - you have two problems...

http://www.intodns.com/northwales-cases.co.uk

1) The domain has missing nameservers.
2) The www record points at 216.21.224.203, which doesn't work. As m4cc45 said, if this record pointed at 209.235.144.9, it would work.

The www address will work if you just fix point 2, but the missing nameserver thing is something that should be fixed. BT will do it for you I'm sure.

Whether or not hosting it with BT will stop it being hacked is another thing altogether.

The trouble is, that BT is adamant that there is NOTHING wrong, so again, this is all adding to our defence in that it clearly isnt 100% correct is it?

As for the hacking, I would have thought not, but what I did, was have his site on both my mine and his BT webspace, and when I pointed his domain to his site, he never got hacked, and when I pointed it to mine, it did. We did this a few times and it verified that he was certainly NOT getting done over with it stored on BT and so thats why he is wanting so much to stick with BT.

During this time it was only his folder that was being afected, but the rest of my files were never touched.

Just get through to someone at BT that actually knows what they're doing and show them that report.

Alternatively, don't BT give you a DNS control panel? If they don't and they're incapable of setting up the DNS correctly, you'll have to change provider. There'd be no other option. To be honest, if it's a business, I wouldn't be hosting with BT anyway, though I'd imagine they're marginally more secure than the "anonymous" credit card / paypal paid Wild West shared platforms. At least (one assumes) you'd need a BT business account to use it?

Serious question - have you contacted support and actually specifically asked for a DNS record to be set up or amended for the www?

That's all it needs

Right, here goes...

First of all, many many thanks to everyone. From both myself and my brother.

I sent my brother an email giving him clear and pretty noob-level advise, explaining in great detail EXACTLY what is the problem, and what needs to be done to sort it out. ( both locations are different , www location needs to point to 209.235.144.9 instead of 216.21.224.203 and so on ) and he said that he does not know what the hell all those numbers are and can I do it.

So, I got all his details off him and I phoned them up myself.

Sure, I dont know, half of what some of you lot clearly know about this, but Im not an idiot, and I was able to blag enough to show them that they cannot keep fobbing us off all the time, and that I was not going to let it drop until the matter is resolved.

So, here we are... If you now check both links, they work.

Once again guys... Many many many thanks!

If you are local to Colwyn Bay anytime, gimme a shout. A pint is on me.
