Right, I'm finally getting round to setting myself up a web page, and I could do with a little advice. I know this is a series of stupid newb questions, but my web-designer mate isn't on MSN atm (an unheard of pheonomenon!), so I can't bug him for answers, and I didn't see any answers in the stickied threads. Anyway, here goes...

1) I've got two hosting options I'm torn between atm...one is 500Mb storage, 10Gb monthly bandwidth for £10 a year, and the other is 1Gb storage, 25Gb monthly bandwidth for £20 a year. I have no idea how much space a proper website will take. I'm planning on using it for photographs, song demos, general keeping-in-touch with people and stuff like that, so which of those two would I be better off with? I'd rather have a fully fleshed out website, as opposed to simple text and coloured backgrounds, and I have a friend who's an aspiring web designer who's agreed to help build the site, so it might take up quite a bit of space...or will it? I have no idea...

2) What do I register first, the domain name, or the webspace? Or does it not matter?

3) What does this mean?

'CPU usage (or usage of the Central Processing Unit(s)) on the web server Customer's account is hosted on is subject to some regulations. That means that each hosting account can take advantage of up to 10% of the CPU power for no longer than 180 seconds at any given time or 3% in the course of 24 hours. Dream Hosting strongly requires that customers be very judicious when using the CPU power for their accounts. Otherwise, we may suspend customer accounts in cases of registered impact on other accounts on the server or disturbance caused to the functioning of the server. If we do suspend an account, then its owner will be notified of that in consistence with the situation that this suspension may provoke. Then the account's owner may be required to upgrade to a dedicated or semi-dedicated web hosting solution. Possible alternative is a required reduction in the load and traffic that the customer's account gets. Dream Hosting reserves the right to block files or scripts that use CPU exceedingly and notify clients.'

The web hosting service I'm looking at is this one - http://www.dream-hosting.co.uk/hosting.php

And the domain name is being registered here - https://www.register1.net/domains.php

Any comments? Hoping to get the stuff started tonight, if possible, so fast replies appreciated. :)

Thanks
tTz

1) Go for the 1Gb option, if you want to host lots of images, the space will get munched, aswell as bandwitdh.

2) Shouldn't matter, I got my domain about a week before hosting, but I got both from the same guys (Hello 10% discount. ;))

3) Means that if your website pwns the server, thus making everyone elses site slow, you'll get suspended. (I think...)

If you go for anything other than a .com domain, it may take several days for the DNS records through out the world to update, a .com domain is 4-8 hours. (iirc)

Well ive been reading up on websites and hosting for a few weeks, I bought my hosting and set up my website less than a week ago (its in sig) the host I went for was ANhosting they give 250GB storage, 250GB monthly bandwidth, everything you need, including a control pannel which is really just point and click they also offer good support and a free domain and its all activated as soon as your pay for your account. What you get from them should be far more than anyone needs for a personal website, exept its American, but the cost translates into about £30 yearly and £3 montly and its still fast speeds I get from them.

The only thing is with the activation you have to wait for them to phone you and give a code to them through a machine :( but I contacted the support on the website and they done it for me and I skipped that part.

For a personal website I would recomend WordPress (themes can be found here ) Its what I use for my website and so do lots of people who just want a personal website thats easy to maintain and looks good.

You can install this onto your website along with many other things in the controll panel that AN hosting gives you.

I was going for a .co.uk domain, seeing as I can get my name registered as the address that way (but not for .com, I think) and it's cheaper. :p

Awwwwwwwww, just when I'd decided, you went and gave me that option... :(

That's perhaps a little excessive for my needs tbh, and the 1Gb option would fit those needs nicely enough...but it's not a lot more money, for a lot more space...but I wouldn't use the space...argh.

Perhaps I should chuck GoDaddy in. :p

You get a nice conversion rate from dollars, and if you happen to watch GD sponsored Rev3 podcasts you can get various discounts. :)

I think it was £9 for a 2 year .com domain, and £35 for 2 years of hosting. :)

To be honest, I think I'd rather stick with a UK provider to save me messing around with currency conversions and the like, and I'm going to avoid the temptation to get something extravagant and fancy...well, I'm going to try, anyway. ;)

:edit:

Then again...GoDaddy looks pretty damned good...5Gb storage for £1.60 a month for 2 years...£38...not bad...

You can pay in your Great British pounds if you so wish. It's also a straight conversion. :) Non of this lets rip Europe off rubbish. :o

If I register for 3 years with GoDaddy, I can get 5Gb storage at £1.40 a month...

They don't give server stats, e-mail addresses, or any of the other frills Dream Hosting had...at least, I don't think they do. And what's all this stuff about SSL certificates? And do GoDaddy take the money in a lump sum, or in monthly chunks?

I'm looking into all of this myself atm, but if anyone has the answers and posts em before I find em, you'll be saving me some effort, and it'll be much appreciated. :p

Lump sum.

I got an email addy with the domain, and they do do stats.

Edit: Looks like I got 500 email addy's with 10mb space each with the hosting too.

Don't think you'd need an SSL certificate tbh.

Hmm. Well, I'm going to get my domain name with Register 1 just now, seeing as its a .co.uk with my name on it, so it'll be easy enough to remember.

Prices seem to have increased quite steeply now. Half an hour ago, I was looking at a £10 hosting plan for a year, now I'm looking at shelling out £50 in one go. Better value, but its hardly the cheap website option I was originally looking at. :p

That said, I could always cut it from 3 years hosting to 1 year hosting...the extra monthly cost isn't a massive amount after conversion...

Heh, they say that Libras are bad at making decisions and choices, and by God, they're right! (whoever the proverbial 'they' are...) ;)

Good luck with it all. :)

Edit: If you do go with GD, when you're checking out, enter DIGG, DIGG2, BERT, PIXEL, INDIGITAL.

You can only use one of them, and I forget which does what, however, some are only for domains so they won't apply. I think its Digg that is 10% an order of $30 or more. :) Worked for me the other week.

Linux seems to be the popular choice, L/A/M/P for life. ;)

If you plan on using MS stuff, .net and .asp etc then go for windows, but most stuff for personal sites will be for Linux hosting. :)

Then Linux it shall be!

Not totally decided yet (need to speak to the guy who'll be building the site for me to see what things he might need) but 2 years with GoDaddy at $2.80 a month for 5Gb storage seems a pretty good deal, maybe throw in a .com domain from them for $1.99 and the original .co.uk domain from Register 1...all in all, about £40 for 2 years worth of decent looking hosting.

Thanks a million, WotDa, you've been a MASSIVE help. :)

:edit:

Heh, even better, I can get the .co.uk domain from GoDaddy for $1.99 anyway without the need for Register 1! :D

:edit2:

Ahhh, the .co.uk ones aren't on the $1.99 offer! Curses! :p
