WEbsite Test Area

I have a website with TSO host, and everything's been fine so far.

However, I would like to know the best way to setup a test site so that the main site isn't effected at all until I know everything is 100% working.

What is the best way to do this?

Is setting up a www.test.mysite.co.uk enough to do this in my cpanel?

Of course I want nothing in the test area to be collected/scanned by any search engine and I don't want anyone other than myself to have access to this area.

You can do that, or you can just simply add a new folder and password protect it.

Address then would be

mysite.com/test

as above, you take what your website is now.

www.website.co.uk and make a new directory so it'll be www.website.co.uk/test

Then password protect the /test directory via cpanel and only you can see it with the password.

Where do I put test folder?

/home/username/public_html/test/

or

/home/username/test/

If you're doing this a lot why not just set up a virtual machine mimicing a TSO server (if they're running linux should be fairly easy) then you can test as much as you like without modifying anything TSO sided. To be honest you'd probably just need a Linux install with a LAMP configuration, which is easy peasy to set up with VM.

i got the impression this was so the op could post it online and get help from others easily
