Hi.

is there a website that shows information about broadband speeds/features for a property or road/area?

Information i am looking to find are if its fibre optic? virgin or bt Line? how far from the telephone exchange?

I am currently looking for a property and want to see how the internet is in that property/area.

Kind regards

You can also check on the Virgin site by using the post code what speeds are available in that area.

Actually that probably works for most broadband provider sites. Or try a broadband price comparison site.

I get conflicting information on all of these sites though.

Some say the house I want to buy has up to 80. BT say 15.

BT 15
Rightmove 15
Plusnet 73 - 80
Vodafone 76
Samknows BT FTTC

I'd take any speeds for a BT PSTN based service with a large pinch of salt, unless you have a phone number to run through BT wholesale checker linked to above.

Some of those checkers don't take into account that a single "place" will be served by multiple cabinets. So some of them will say "place" has been upgraded to FTTC, but in reality only 1 or 2 of the cabinets have been done, and there could be 5 or 6 cabs.

As Chris says, the most reliable method is to find a number on the street to use with the BT checker. That will tell you what cab it's connected to.

how would u go about finding the number?

I was sort of doing this when I was looking to move, I'd find out the postcode and street name then to find out a door number of a property I'd use the address finder here http://www.royalmail.com/find-a-postcode as something like rightmove never gave out the specific door number of a property.

Once I found that out I'd use the BT Wholesale checker as mentioned above and check by specific address, this got me pretty accurate results and have a decent idea of the potential broadband speed.

The other option is to check out Broadband maps at http://maps.thinkbroadband.com/ - if people down the street you are looking at have done a speedtest and submitted their result you can get an idea what kind of speed you may get. Simply enter a post code then on the left hand side enable 'Speed Test Results'.

For door number on the property page on Rightmove click on the Map & Street View tab and use Street View to look for it above the door, on the gate etc. If there is none visible or you can't make it out then look at the neighbours numbers and work it out from there.
