Hi all,

My mate is having a problem with his computer, he is connected to the Internet and can use messenger and the iTunes store (via iTunes) but when he loads up Internet Explorer it comes up with the 'page can not be displayed' for any website he tries.

I thought it might have been the firewall but he turned it off (checked the Windows Firewall and his other software one (no idea if the ntl modem has one in it?)), so I'm all out of ideas.

Any suggestions?

Tell him to check his connection settings -

Tools - Internet Options - Connections

Make sure his connection is set to his default one, or if he using a network port (think ntl does) set it to "Never Use a connection"

also make sure the box for "detect connection settings every time" is unticked.

As said, check his firewall. maybe get him to disable the windows one.

Try msn'ing him the Firefox .exe - Once I couldn't get IE to work so I installed Firefox and that worked fine and the customer was happy with that! :D

I doubt it will be a firewall issue.

Can you ping websites?

start --> run --> cmd

ping bbc.co.uk

you should get a reply from 212.58.224.131

Check for proxy settings in IE: Tools --> internet options --> connections --> lan settings

By default this whole page is blank (unless your isp tells you otherwise... but this is unlikely as msn and itunes work)

Check for ad/spyware/viruses.

Check the hosts file (%windir%\system32\drivers\etc\hosts) - by default, it should only have:

127.0.0.1 Localhost
