I'd recommend the Yongnuo 600EX-RT- With your budget you can get a few and you will have the equivalent of the Canon flash for a fraction of the price.

As a start, learn about bouncing flash

Yep, get a couple of YN600EX-RTs, about £100 each.

Then pick up a copy of the Speedliter's Handbook. There's a new version due out at the end of this month which has been updated for the radio system on the 600EX so I'd wait for that.
