* weekend football thread *

Arsenal can't defend for toffee.

If they had of scored first , they would have sat back and allowed Man Utd to score.

They really wouldn't have. Their back 4 is bad enough as it is but they get no protection. Our equaliser at Anfield the other week summed Arsenal up; 4-3 up in the 93rd minute and Arsenal have 4 players trying to mark 6 Liverpool players in their 18 yard box.

edit: BTW i mean they wouldn't have sat back rather than Utd wouldn't have scored.

In his few appearances on MOTD, i was beginning to think Keown knew his stuff but he's just said that Kuyt is clinical from the edge of the box and should be playing alongside Torres :p

He probably is quite clinical from the edge of the box, it's in the box he's ****ing atrocious.

He has a good shot on him like, but would never put him up front again.

Kuyt's an odd one. One minute he looks shocking then he'll pop up with a important goal or assist.

He most certainly isn't ****ing atrocious. No matter how poor the Dutch League is, you don't score 30+ goals in 3(?) consecutive seasons if you can't finish. He's very hit and miss but this season he's been more hit than miss.

I also wouldn't play him up with alongside Torres but not because he can't play there but because we'd have to break up the formation we've got going, where he's made that right sided role his own and where Gerrard is unstoppable.

No, from what I've seen of his finishing this season it has been bloody atrocious, there's no other way to describe it. Even when he scores in the box, it's usually some fluffed, scuffed shot!

Don't get me wrong, I like the guy, his effort, and even skill is very good but the guy is horrible around the 6 yard box. He must have picked up the Afonso disease when coming over here.

Don't think he's played many games upfront for us this season but when he has he hasn't been great. As a converted right sided midfielder you can't really complain with 15 goals and 11 assists and hopefully he'll improve next season.

He gets himself in really good positions in the box even when playing right mid too though and still messes up. His crossing seems to be top notch at times too so he's fitting into the position well.

Everything about Kuyt (well other than his work rate) is hit and miss. His finishing can be terrible but it can be very good. Because of his new position he doens't get into the 6 yard box too often but early in the season and as of late, when he's got their he's more often than not put the chance away. However you always no that he's more than capable of missing a chance that looks easier to score than miss, like what he did vs Blackburn.

15 goals from a right sided position is more than reasonable and at a guess, Ronaldo would be the only player in the league with a better strike rate from out wide.

edit: i mentioned his crossing the other day and....it's hit and miss. Our 1st goal vs Arsenal summed it up; first cross was shocking and hits the first man but he puts the rebound on Torres' head.

You've got half right half wrong, the back four themselves, Toure, Gallas, Clichy and Sagna, last year had the least losses in the league they are fine. AS you said its our midfield, almost all our goals we've conceded, basically all the goals against you, utd, chelsea, all of them were utterly missing midfield. That 4th goal against you made me cry, it wasn't that Song, Diaby was it Denilson also were up the field and unable to get back, they simply did what they always do, jog back, ignore midfield runners and stop, all of them could have gotten to the ball ahead of your players, in the move they all started off deeper than the liverpool players but every single time they slow down and stop.

There is no back 4 in the world that can mark 6 men in the box well, its quite literally impossible.

The most embarassing thing about it is, it was so obviously clear in our very first preseason game, all through the first transfer window, up to the second transfer window. Wenger decided that we had a problem scoring goals, and the 250% higher goals conceded than Utd compared to the 2 goals less scored apparently didn't matter. SO he spunked all our money on Arshavin, while a simply superb player, he completely ignored our problem. It was only after being trashed by Chelsea, without anywhere near our first team back four with Clichy and Gallas missing and Sagna still struggling after injuries, that Wenger decided defence was our problem this year and has since used them as a scapegoat for the failure of the entire year.

Arsenal would never have won this weekend against Utd, they came out with a weakened team and barely even tried, there was no surging runs constantly throughout the game, no breaking properly, no one really cared, they knew they'd get the point and they didn't seem to be remotely worried. If Arsenal were a real threat, frankly, Utd would have put in proper effort, a better team and actually tried, the fact they didn't try, its depressing, they just sensed no threat at all from us.

I half think that Wengers abnormal love affair with complementing Fergie in the past couple weeks is a desparate cry asking Fergie not to embarasse them, which frankly they could easily have done. We looked half decent against a side that simply couldn't be bothered. When they could be bothered they trashed us in the champs league.

The cross for Benayoun's goal was sublime in the same game.

Arsenal did dominate possession etc, we couldn't have complained if they'd got a goal really. Only thing I would say is that for all their good work there were very few times when they really threatened.

I would certainly agree with that. I think their clearest chance was with VDS wrong footed and a shot going marginally wide before VP diverted it across the 6 yard box

Best fans in the country thats why.

Make your own mind's up. :p

Here's the comparisons in case anyone is interested.

I like Ranieri, would be great to see him back in England.

Nice guy, average manager.

There was a great quote some Valencia defender when Ranieri took over at Valencia. He asked Ranieri how they were going to set-up defensivly and Ranieri just replied by saying the same way as last year, the Valencia defender responded by saying we had 10 different ways last year.

As great as that is. You've killed any credibility Newcastle had from your original comment by posting those stats, look at the dates ;)
