Looking at going to Berlin next month.

No idea where to stay.

Looking to spend about £500ish per person with flights for 4-5 nights.

Wanting to relax and not cram everything in to 2-3 days and just wonder around, see the sights and maybe do a bit of shopping.

I dont know the areas of Berlin so dont really know what area to stay in, ive seen the Radisson Blu for £455 each for sat to fri with flights.

Anyone been and can guide us where to go?

We tend to walk everywhere and dont really use public transport so closer to stuff the better really.

Thanks

Free walking tour is pretty good and I think they have bike tours as well. Berlins a great walking city plus it's full of history.

I'm going in September, everything seems to be around Tiergarten area. The Radisson Blu is close to there, as I was looking at it, very nice hotel.

I ended up booking the Best Western as we got a good deal on it.

I've just been to Berlin. Stayed in the 25 Hour Hotel with a room overlooking the Zoo. The hotel is pretty nice must have been built fairly recently.

Why do you not use public transport? People I know who don't use it and instead use taxis and the like do so because they are scared. But Berlin is super easy to get around with public transport, you'd be doing yourself a disservice if you avoided public transport.

Do a walking tour, the usual world war stuff, and check out some of the squat houses that have been turned into bars and galleries. There's a really cool one near the library memorial (a window into the groubd) that is just someone's house turned into a bar. There are heaps though, check them out they're really unique.

Berlin is by far the cheapest capital in Western Europe. I'm not someone to stay in the raddison, but bear in mind the city is very cheap for a capital.

My girlfriend and I are off to Berlin for 5 days in a week or 2. We are staying in Alexendarplatz (Hotel Indigo). Hotel cost about £400 for both of us. Will let you know how it is

Berlin was great, considerably cheaper than London.

We stayed at the Circus hotel which was central and cheap. It was also in an area with plenty of places to eat that weren't particularly touristy.

In terms of sights that stuck in the mind:

Reichstag - book in advance to go up into the dome
Holocaust memorial - free (I think) and very poignant
Stazi prison - http://en.stiftung-hsh.de/index.php - outside the centre, but throughly worth the journey. The tours are fascinating, but only ran on certain days in English

100 times this. You would be mad not to use public transport in Berlin?

Another + on the public transport in Berlin. It's almost a tourist attraction in itself in that it's an epic system.

I went 5 or 6 years back and the Berlin wall was incredible. Hard to wrap your head around even when you see it.

Can't remember where I stayed now sorry. Oh and there is umm a 'niche' museum that is worth a look :)

I am planning a few days in Berlin in a couple of months and I've been told to find a place as close to Prenzlauer Berg and Mitte. There will be 6 of us, and we plan to stay in an appartment as they cost a lot less than that of a hotel.

Are these the areas you need to be near, but if you did stay a few miles from those areas, is it easy to get to and from without hassle no matter what time of day/night it is?

Our biggest problem is finding somewhere for 6 guys with single beds if its possible.:) We live in different parts of the world so we picked Berlin this time for a meet up.

Why don't you stay in a hostel then?

Went last month for 4 days. Stopped in a hostel which was around £30 a night.

Everything I saw was in walkable distance.

Berlin is great, but try not to overdo the history as you'll cast a long and depressing shadow over what is now a happy and vibrant place.
