What would you say is preferable for weight training. Doing three sets of 15 of a heavier weight or three sets of 20 on a lighter dumbell (say 5lb) or just keep going to failure?

I typically do 10 sets of 20 reps, (or 40 if one limb at a time) of varied things, everything with dumbells, other than the leg presses, which i use a machine for. At the 2nd set it normally starts to burn..

I find doing 15 instead of 20 of heavier harder than the 20 TBH, but i'm also getting on a bit.. and do not want to do an injury, and not looking to bulk up in any way.. looking to slim down more than anything.. as i'm already quite stocky !

Check out the first post in the Gym Rats thread... All kinds of gains to be had there! :) However, generally 12 reps is the most one would GENERALLY go in for. So 3 sets of 12 reps.

The answer to your question is squats. In fact, the answer to most gym-related questions is "do more squats" now that I think about it...
