I have a bit of a weird problem, a friend of mine asked me to have a look at their laptop as they couldn't get on the internet with it. They use AOL 9 VR and a USB BT Voyager 105 ADSL modem. When they try and connect, AOL goes through the motions but ultimatley doesn't connect (usually the error message is that the server couldn't be contacted). The weird thing is that they use the modem in their desktop computer too and it connects fine with no problems, same line, same modem, same cables and the same settings on the AOL software.
The laptop was full of spyware, so I opted to do a full wipe and reinstall of windows etc, which I did. I took it back tonight and it still won't connect, if I try and use the diagnostic software on the modem, whilst it is plugged into the laptop, it says that it couldn't connect because the line is busy - if I plug it into the desktop computer and do the same diagnostics, they go through fine.
The only thing I can think of is that the USB isn't quite giving the modem enough power to connect, but they have connected the laptop using the modem in the past without any problems. Does anyone have any suggestions? thanks in advance
