Weird behaviour in some games

Hey people,

Recently got this issue popping up which is quite worrying. Basically whilst playing games it will freeze yet i can hear the game carrying on for a few seconds before it starts throwing up weird objects and artifacts all over the screen with flickering. The sound then becomes completely distorted and i have to open task manager to quit.

No error message is thrown up but whats worse is, once this happens i've no choice but to restart my pc cause opening any programs will cause them to instantly crash and they all look odd with icons messed up or words missing in steam etc. Chrome for example opens with all my bookmark icons completely messed up, icons missing and will sit in a loop of Oops google chrome has shut down would you like to relaunch.

Iinitially i thought my GPU was dying but i've removed that and tried a game using onboard and got the exact same result so I can rule my GPU out of this. I've also managed to pass a Memtest so i'm guessing ram is ok?

Is there anything else which can be causing this to happen?

Thanks.

Heres an image of a steam chat just after one of these crashes happened: http://postimg.org/image/z5j6oehwj/full/

and heres what happens to chrome also after a game crashes: http://postimg.org/image/bq19j1y5f/full/

Its windows 7 mate, specs are:

Phenom 965
HD6850
Asrock 960GM-GS3
4GB Corsair XMS 1333

They're all set to stock settings, no OC'n or anything like that.

Tbh, i think its the board, i've had issues with it in the past being funny with 2 sticks of ram etc and should have replaced it by now. Was cheap and i was on a right budget when i built the machine.

It could well be im not an expert on boards but ifyou have taken out gfx (which you have) and still have issues then you have narrowed it down to cpu (i dont think it is as its only games) Ram or mobo. so Then the next question is just a new mobo or full upgrade lol

How long did you run a memtest for? Maybe leave it for 8 hours one night and see if it still passes everything?

Also maybe try updating your chipset drivers and Video card drivers. And maybe download and update DirectX? (Though that last one seems unlikely to be the issue).

Finally what temps are your CPU cores throwing out?

My CPU never goes above 35c on prime with the h100 so i'd imagine around 30-35c in games, the gpu never goes above 55c unless i run Kombusters test in which case it will climb to around 63c. This is what puzzles me cause no stress testing, be it gpu, cpu or ram causes my pc to freeze/crash it just seems to be certain games.

GRID and Auto Club Revolution were the main culprits whilst i could play FIFA13 for hours on end without issues. I've managed to play Auto Club for most of the day though today so i haven't got a clue whats going on.

My front panel audio is causing the issues. I didn't realise that today its been playing both games perfectly fine all day with my headphones unplugged. I unplugged them this morning when moving my pc to refit the gpu.

If i put the headphones back in though, as they usually are 24/7, the game crashes and all the odd issues begin again.

Could this be driver related or something wrong with the actual headphone jack / front panel header on the board?
