I've got many email addresses available to me, but as I'm a BT internet customer (I know!!!) they will only send my bills and other BT crap to my @btinternet.com email address...

Problem I'm getting is I can't for the life of me get this email address to work offline with any desktop email software!..

I've tried Windows Live, Thunderbird, Outlook 2010.. hell I've even tried the email program built into the Opera browser, but they all throw up an error message and can't access my mail!..

Strange thing being that, using the EXACT same settings, I CAN access the mailbox on my Android phone!!...

Anyone know weather BBT block 'offline' viewing of the mailboxes or is there a known work arround/fix for getting it working!!??...

Cheers

Are you having trouble sending and receiving or just sending?
I recently set up windows live mail on win 7 to access BT mail for my dad and it worked fine. There were a few tick boxes involved though it wasnt just the default settings.

Also on the first screen when your setting up you supply your email address as the login (correctly). Then on the next gui its magicaly been shrunk to just the name bit and you have to alter it to your full emal again.

If you are realy struggling, just use the web interface to access your mail.

Incoming Mail (POP3) Server - mail.btinternet.com
Port (usually specified in 'Advanced settings') - 110

Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Server - mail.btinternet.com

Port (usually specified in 'Advanced Settings') - 25

Account Name/Login Name - Your email address (including the "@btinternet.com" or "@btopenworld.com" part)

Password - Your BT Yahoo! password

Please note: if your client does not support SMTP authentication, you will not be able to use it to send your BT Yahoo! Mail messages.

Are the settings I used. The SMTP auth was the tick box I mentioned. You have to force it on in the client.

Your BT bill can be sent to any email address and not just the BT internet one. Our bill doesn't come to my BT internet address.

Why would you expect it to connect while offline?

By Offline, I think he's refering to not using a browser based client.

@op - you should easilly be able to configure it to use any desktop client, so something in your settings must be wrong. I use BT with Outlook 2010 and it works a treat.

Post yer settings please??.. (obviously not account and password! :D ).. I've tried everything!.

Its still weird that it works perfectly on my Android Phone using the same settings I tried on my Laptop!...

Does this help?...

Note that the User Name under Logon Information should be your email, eg 1234 at btinternet dot com, but you only need the 1234 part, don't include the at btinternet dot com.

Yep, those are exactly the settings I used, and I tried em again just to make sure...

Still no joy!! :(

I'll get a Screengrab tonight and paste it up here!..

Still don't know why it works perfectly on my Phone with those EXACT settings!!

Using your settings 'again' I quickly set up in Live Mail... and get this error..

Weirdly I set up at work using 'Seamonkey' and it worked!! Seems my Laptop (spec below) with what ever email client I use, don't work what ever I try!!..

I even tried the BT Desktop Help thinngy!!.. and that got an error too.. but it couldn't understand its own error message!!..

Don't want to phone BT as I always get and Indian person who wants remote access to my 'pooter from abu-dabi or where ever they are!!

Its Avast Antivirus doing it!!.. for a test I turned off the 'Mail Shield' and clicked 'Send/Receive' and it worked no probs!!.. but I want the mail shield so I looked for 'Avast not allowing BTInternet' in google... and found this!..

1. Open Avast

2. Click on 'Settings' (upper right corner of page)

3. Click on 'Troubleshooting'

4. Click on 'Redirect Settings'

5. Clear all the port #'s from each field

6. Check 'Ignore Local Communication'

7. Click 'OK'

8. Close Avast

Problem solved!

This works!.. hopefully it won't open me up to hacking etc... failing that I considered AVG or MS Security Essentials as a replacement!!..
