Hi,

I built my PC yesterday with all components.

I did a outside build and everything went fine. Put it in Case everything went fine.

Power PSU on via switch no noise everything fine switch pc on. Install windows everything went smoothly. Played some games last night and did usual pc updates etc was fine. Switched off late last night went to bed.

This morning woke up, switch the PSU power switch on (Not the PC) and there was a weird buzzing noise coming from the PSU. This only happens when i switch the PSU switch on. When its off the noise goes.

I proceed to turning my PC on, and the noise goes away once the PC is on. Any ideas?

I uploaded a video to youtube to see.

Whats C1e ?

This:
In the late Pentium 4 era Intel introduced an Enhanced Halt State, called C1E. Instead of just shutting off the clock to the CPU, when a CPU was in C1E its clock speed and voltage would both be reduced to their lowest possible value. The reduction in voltage results in a reduction in leakage current, which in turn saves power.

It's not anything to do with C1E. C1E is a BIOS setting for the CPU. Simply turning the on/off switch on a PSU does NOT boot up the PC and so the BIOS is not booted.

The noise you are hearing is coil whine. It's the transformer in your PSU buzzing as power is applied to it.

Do you think i should RMA it? IS it normal? Can i still use the PC? Its weird how it stops when i start the pc though

You don't need to RMA your PSU. Coil whine is not a sign of impending failure it's just an unfortunate side effect that happens sometimes. It's basically a vibration of the coil. All coils vibrate when voltage is applied but sometimes the resonance is audible. The good thing in your case is that the resonance becomes in-audible once the PC is booted. I wouldn't worry about it.

Ah!

Only reason is because i use WOL sometimes from work and if i leave the psu on i just got a bit worried in case it shorts one day and messes everything up in the computer! :(

How comes it happens now though when yesterday there was no noise whatsoever?

thats right i didnt read the full post just saw psu buzz and assumed it was board power saving (c1e)

if its making it without powering on the mb then its psu coil whine and it wont hurt anything but can be annoying if loud

If its a new power pack I would send it back. That noise would drive me crazy. Power packs shouldn't make that noise however harmless it is. Tell them its in your bedroom an its impossible to sleep.
