Hi Forum,

Ive got a file thats on a internal drive that will not delete no matter what I do,

Done reboots etc,

Keeps saying ,,the action cant be completed because the file is open in windows explorer..

..close file and try again..

Any ideas??
I have windows 7 64bit

Cheers

Depending on how desperate you are to get rid of the file there are a few solutions.

1) I seem to recall a program called "Unlocker" for just this purpose, it'll show what program is accessing the file and if needed, override the lock and delete it anyway

2) If that fails, Download a liveCD version of linux (Ubuntu would do) and boot from that, then delete the file that way.

You should make sure that the file you are deleting isnt a critical system file or something that actually is in use by windows before trying either of these steps though.

Its a MKV file and I installed MATROSKA today so will uninstall that to see if that works

Cheers for reply

The reason you can't delete files is due to Explorer generating thumbnails for your .mkv's. This has been a bug since XP.
If you want to generate thumbnail previews in Windows you will very often run into this issue.

You can simply disable thumbnail view in explorer, reboot and never get the issue again.

As for 'codec packs'; more often than not they just cause annoying problems. Most people who go down this path use the 'CCCP' pack.
If you want to watch .mkvs and don't want to install codecs into your system you can just use 'Media Player Classic Home Cinema'.

Thanks yashiro great help :)

Another vote for MPC-hc, fantastic bit of kit and no more codec hassles. I used to use unlocker, and it was immensely satisfying every time it did its thing!

I'm using it now seems slot quicker,I've never had a problem in the
Past with not bring able to delete files
