Hi all,

Ok, I just bought a car for the Wife, when I went to look at the car it had a private plate on, I liked the car so left a deposit, the owner said that when I pick it up it will have the original reg plates transferred back.
So I pick it up and it does have the original plates on , upon filling out the V5 it had the private reg printed on it, didnt see at the time that this would be an issue.
So now I cannot tax the vehicle as when I try on the government website it does not recognize the original reg.
Anybody experienced this before?
Also what is the process when you revert from a private plate back to the original reg?
Might have made a bit of a schoolboy error here as the seller has now emigrated to Majorca.
Any input/advice would be gratefully appreciated :)
Hope the post makes sense.

Cheers in advance.

It has the original reg plate on now, I dont own the private reg that was on it before.

Err i think you do!!!

Anyway don't take any notice of me as I've never actually been involved in this sort of thing.

Although I suspect the bloke hasn't done the paperwork in time, probably in the post.

So tax it with the old plates and change over if and when the paperwork goes through.

If you signed the v5 and with the private plate and it was sent to the dvla, you do own that reg. Congratulations.

Sounds like he just slapped the original plates back on it. If he wanted to keep it he should have transferred it/put it on retention and waited for the new v5 before selling it

Go back to the government website to look for a contact over the issue. That is what I would do. Good luck....Also....what they said above lol.

Of you have a v5 with the private reg that has been filled out and transferred online / sent away the car is still under that registration. Likelihood is you will receive a new v5 with those details. You therefore have the wrong places on.

If the registration has been transferred properly you might then have to revert back to the original plates at some point, assuming you receive documentation - but i t sounds like the seller didn't understand how to actually put the plate on retention and just whacked the originals back on

yup sounds like you might've just received free private plates.
If the V5 has your name on it and the private reg then you own it.

Whats the reg? :p

Crikey, so I may own the reg. He said when I first viewed the car that he is getting it changed and it's gonna cost him80 quid, does this ring any bells to anyone who has done this before?
Good point on the insurance thing, yesterday I checked the tax status using the old private reg and it says it was taxed but now it says it isn't, so something is happening but not sure what.
Wife is stunned that she can't drive her new car.

If you have the new keeper supplement with the old reg, tax and insure it with that until you get something back from the DVLA. It's a big confusing now it can be done online, I'm sure you used to have to send off the v5 to prevent this sort of stuff happening.

It's not really confusing, just a case of the seller being impatient and not waiting a couple of days for a replacement V5 to come through (assuming he has actually put the plate on retention) - When I assigned my Private plate online, the replacement V5 arrived next day! (Whereas my initial New Keeper supplement took about a month).

Surely also the Op should have checked the paperwork and not bought the car without the "correct" paperwork.

Sellers who cannot be bothered to do this before selling privately deserve to lose the plate, it is hugely annoying for the new owner.
