Weird Corruption in Games with X1800XT

Hey

A friend of mine has been having problems with his X1800XT 256MB recently. He's getting weird colours and shapes when he plays any games. Also, he's getting lots of corruption in ATI Tool straight away when he runs the artifact test. He upgraded to the 7.7 drivers yesterday but it made no difference.

He had ATI overdrive enabled for a little while after he got the card, but that was the only overclocking he did. I'm guessing that the memory on the card is screwed and that it's RMA time. Is there anything else he can try or should he just return the card?

By the way, if he returns the card, what do you think he's likely to get back? Would they still have some X1800XTs lying around or would he get something newer?

Thanks

Certainly is things he can try, check for overheating (ATI tool gives complete readings - the GPU shouldn't be going over about 80 degrees), check the heatsink isn't clogged up with dust, check the heatsink seems to be contacting the GPU and ram correctly. Could also try uninstalling drivers, using driving cleaner pro in safe mode on all ATI files/entries and then reinstalling them. Reseat the card too.

If none of that helps and it's happening in all games, then I'd say it's RMA time.

Thanks for the suggestions. His temps aren't particularly high - 50C idle and between 70C and 75C under load. I'll get him to try the other ideas but I've got a feeling the card is dead.
