Weird Freezing / Screen goes funny. (Inc Picture)

I have a 7900GS and recently when playing kinda demanding games like Bf2, HL2 it freezes. It only goes all funny after about 30mins but this dosnt always happen and its sometimes fine.

Picture of what happens...

I think this is artifacting?

Any suggestions? Is another 7900 series biteing the dust?

Any one?

Ive also got one of these cards (mines a Gainward) and have had similar issues...

Ive also experienced the odd bluescreen from nv4_disp

After searching about on the net, it seems a few people are experiencing problems like this and is being atributed to faulty cards (mainly from manurfacturers who overclock them from the start, which includes Gainward and XFX etc..)

A few forum threads I have seen have quoted people as having been on their 3rd RMA already.

Aparently one of the main makers (cant remember which) acknowledged the problem and reworked their card design to fix the problem (not sure on that tbh)

So it might be worth talking to manurfacturer of your card (rather than the supplier) and see if they have made similar revisions and whether a direct RMA is possible, as RMA'ing to a supplier may simply get you another card that will fail.

Most reports Ive seen have said that their GPU core never goes over 60c (I can confirm this, even with playing video on 1 screen and a game on the other, never had the core go over 58c, most times its around 50c.

If its a heat issue, its belived to be either the memory chips themselves, or 2 small IC's which aparently get red hot to the touch after a short while, (could be power regulation)

It doesnt bode well for all the people who ran out to get 7900GS (especially clocked variants) as a cheap, fast card.

Hmm thanks for that.

My card is actually OcUK's version of the 7900GS 512mb which does come with a slight more of a clock than the 256 version. The card its self is a 'Palit' - but if i was to RMA it i assume it would be via OCuK?.

I also see they dont sell the card no more - what happens there now? Will it just be sent off for repair - if so it isnt worth it as it would take ages? :(

Hmmmmm

Thats definately a borked card, looks like the memory to me, 7900's have an astronomical failure rate.

RMA it back to OcUK, seen as the 7900's are not made anymore you will get a new card, they have to give you a card thats equal to, or has better performance. :)

Not sure what happens to the OcUK branded ones that are past the 28days, they may not send their own branded cards back to the manufacturer to replace, and so may just replace themselves seen as its their brand, if thats the case your only talking about 10 days max for a replacemet, id send them a webnote just to ask.

Does indeed look like duff memory going by pic, whats the temps like in your case btw and on the gfx card? Only ask as it seems strange that you say it takes around 30mins on average, if at all to happen...

Is the card overheating? the weather is quite warm atm. How is the case cooling? is the case closed/open? If its open how hot does the card feel?

Could be a bOrked card but it could also be an overheating card, may even be something else but most likey not?.

Do some genrak stabilty tests on your PC (Prime/Orthos etc), may be something else in the system so u need to make sure before u RMA the card.

Let us know how you got on..

I have a Gainward 7900GS which is exibiting similar problems, some artifacts occasionally and big problems when alt-tabbing from 3d applications and such..

The worst trouble I get is the whole screen goes into that garbled crap like the line across yours, or the primary monitor just turns off alltogether.

This usually happens when Im running video or similar on the second monitor, while running 3d app (like WoW) on main monitor and I alt-tab. Usually I find if I put the system into standby and back again, it comes back with normal screens again, at least for a while.

Im not sure whether to RMA mine to OCuk or direct to Gainward, as it seems the card manurfacturers are more awear of the faults than the suppliers (no disrespect meant to OCuk there).

Anyone have any ideas what they are likely to replace a 256mb 7900GS with, if the 7900models are no longer being made?

Will do :)

Another problem i get is when i boot up my PC, my monitor dosnt come one so im guessing that it cant find the 7900GS - hit reboot and it works fine :P

standard 7900 series feature that, they will all die eventually. come vista when people change over to the aero desktop and the card runs 3d mode all the time the 7900 cards will drop like flies.
