Weird goings on

I had a little go at overclocking, things seemed to be running fine, but then I had a crash and reboot while in a game. Taking that as an indication I pushed my machine too far, I reset the motherboard back to optimised settings.

However I've started to have wierd little problems, sometimes alt-tabbing in a game will make it run VERY slowly, sub 20 FPS. Sometimes after quitting a game I can't open a majority of programs, I double click on them, get a bit of hard drive activity then nothing, no error message.
After this has happened, if I Ctrl-Alt-Del and click on task manager, it won't pop up, if I Ctrl-Alt-Del again, nothing happens.

I did a virus scan with avast, I also did the same with AVG, both came up clean.

I've had Othos running for hours on this machine and not turn up a problem, but I am wondering about my RAM, the crash that happened in a game was identical to a crash I used to have when I had my RAM in the wrong slots, high picthed squeel then restart.
But I'm running my RAM below stock values, even what I was overclocking my machine, it was only running at stock.

Another worry is my hard drive, it's been dodgy since day 1, always running very hot compared to an identical drive in my machine.

maybe you should run a benchmark and see what it shows? obviously you cant run all games in safe mode but maybe you could test something in there too like switching between full screen apps or something?

Try doing a chkdisk / scandisk. Perhaps it has corrupted a couple of files. It has happened to me before when trying to OC.

Can you suggest a good benchmark? I've run 3Dmark2006 several times without problems.

I'll give that a go, I have noticed a few corrupted programs, I've had to reinstall winamp twice.

Just did a memtest, it passed.
Did chkdsk /r which found several problems.
Ran 3dmark about 8 times in a row with no problems giving similar scores, I left it the machine for about 1/2 hour, screen saver etc kicked in. I load up 3dmark again and it absolutly crawled through all the tests and when it came to giving a score, the whole machine froze.
