weird graphical problem

Doesn't look good at all. Would say it has to go back, probably the graphics chip becoming too hot or not connecting well enough.

Very unfortunate but also very rare.

I would say they would replace it rather than repair, I would push for replacement if there was any doubt about the thing - especially given it's only a few weeks old like you say.

Give Apple a ring and they'll be able to advise you better.

It is rare. Never seen it on a MacBook but a work colleague of mine had to go through two iMacs to fix a similar problem. He got the last laugh as the first and second one was a G5 and the third an Intel based one. Result.

update: have not had a recurrences of any issues and ran an extensive hardware test (from osx cd) which came back clean after 47mins. Does the hardware test check the video hardware for issues?
