Weird hanging issues with new build

Hi all,

I'm sure this will be a hard one to diagnose but here goes.

I've just built a new machine, the only thing existing from my old machine are my two OCZ SSD's, 1TB WD backup drive and my ATI 7870.

The new stuff is an AMD FX-8120 CPU, Corsair H50 cooler, Asus M5A99X Evo Motherboard, Kingston HyperX Genesis 16GB RAM, Be Quiet PSU and Lian Li case.

All temps are ok and I've just formatted and installed a fresh copy of Windows 7 on the SSD. This issue occurred on my old Windows 7 OS (with the new hardware). The issue is intermittent but the PC will hang for around 10 seconds after I've 'done something', i.e, opened a new tab in Chrome, Started installing something, opened My Documents, etc. There is no consistency and when the PC hangs I'm able to click on some background windows so it's not completely stalling, it's just really bizarre and annoying! It will also be a like a catch up thing so if I click on My Docs and it stalls and I try clicking again, and again when the PC comes back to life it will then have opened three windows of My Documents.

What's more strange is that it never happens in any of the games I play? I've played Grid 2, Sleeping Dogs, GW2 and FM13 and not once has this occurred then.

The obvious thing was for me to install Windows 7 again which I did and the same issue occurs annoyingly. This didn't happen on my older Intel build by the way. Anything else I can try?

Edit: Also when it hands the curser has that little circle thing that replaced the hourglass, if I was on a PC 10 years old I wouldn't think anything of this!

Have you got the 2 ssd's in raid?

If so, i would install to 1 only (disconnect the other drives) and run it on its own for a while to see if you have any problems, then add the other ssd and hdd.

Also i would do a "secure erase" to the ssd's.

Can you enable AHCI in bios on that motherboard?

If so you could try this reg hack so you don't have to reinstall windows. (do this first before altering bios other wise you will just get bsod)

This may cure the problems you are having.

Secure erase is a way to return a ssd to factory state

you need to be in ahci mode for ssd's esp if the os is installed on them

ide will be much slower and probably the cause of the hanging

I'll echo what Wazza and Freddie64 have said about ACHI mode. The pausing does sound very much like an SSD issue (similar to an OCZ issue I had, but in my case the bios was already in AHCI Mode) and this could easily be down to the IDE settings.
