Weird line appearing on TV when playing games

Excuse the odd nature of this post, quite hard to convey without actually seeing the problem. Anyway, my friend is having an issue with TV & 360 Elite. When playing a game and the screen gets busy or quite bright a line appears on the screen.

He says the line can cover about 1/3 of the screen (horizontally), it appears at random points on the screen when it happens. He described it similar to when you see tracking lines on screen with a VHS tape. He isn't sure if it is the games (RES5 but has happened on others), the 360 Elite or the TV.

Any ideas? He is using a Sony Bravia 40" 1080p, connected through HDMI to the Elite. Thanks

EDIT - He says setting it to 720p seems to have stopped the line. Despite the game having 720p/1080i/1080p on the back. Any ideas?

First port of call would be testing the cable with another device and then ideally another cable to fully rule those out.

Then test the different sockets, then another HDMI device. After exhausting these you can lay the blame with the TV.

Sounds like a scanning / scaling issue with the TV. Do you know if the TV is HDReady or HDReady 1080p?
