I've just started having a problem trying to access shared resources on my HTPC. Here's the scenario:

  • 3 pc's in the house. The HTPC can see and access the other 2 fine. The other 2 Pc's can access one another fine
  • I couldnt ping the HTPC from my main machine, or access via VNC. However, i realised it was sygate firewall blocking this, so that is now uninstalled
  • I can ping the HTPC from my main machine and access via VNC now
  • I still cant browse via "my network places" to the HTPC

Ive tried:

  • disabling all firewalls on the HTPC (inc windows built in), disabling peerguardian 2 and NOD 32 AV
  • rolling system back with system restore a couple of days before some windows updates were done the other day
  • removed Sygate altogether
  • re-run network setup wizard on all 3 machines and even changed workgroup name

i cant think of anything else...but still cant access the HTPC to browse folder?! any ideas?

not any more sadly...it used to

its got to be something to do with MS, i can ping the HTPC, and access it via VNC fine....just cant browse shared folders!

as far as error messages go, when i try and browse to either "\\Htpc" or "\\192.168.1.103" (internal IP) I get

\\Htpc is not accessible. You might not have premission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have permissions.

Access is denied

windows firewall is off on the HTPC now....

believe the share is the same, it certainly used to work ok...ive run through windows network setup wizard on both and even changed workgroup name to start from scratch so to speak.

how do i check NTFS permissions? that could be related since my media centre is in NTFS, but my main PC is in fat32 iirc

both on Win XP, although HTPC is on media centre edition

Chcked all the right services are running? Server, Comp Browser and all that.
Try creating another user on the HTPC and accessing it via those credentials.

Boo to uninstalling Sygate firewall, best one around

yeah services are running. Sygate is back on now, dont think it's that

Why would his router be blocking anything on the LAN ? :p

Badass - untick "use simple folder sharing" within folder options>view and have a play! :)

will try that, thanks

dont THINK it's the router, but will see if i have some cable long enough to connect the 2 machines :)

hmmmmmmn, disabling simple file sharing seems to do nothing. ive even created a custom rule within sygate to allow all traffic from my IP (of the main PC) but still doesnt work.

can still access HTPC fine via VNC. HTPC can browse the shared folders on main PC fine, just not visa versa

any more suggestions guys?
