I am facing a weird problem when overclocking my rig. I go inbto the BIOS and change everything i need, reboot my system normally and test it out at the given speed and everything seems to be normal, ORTHOS stable for more than 8 hours, and with the temps not exceeding 60c on 1.3750v.

The problem arises when i have to cold boot, the mobo is stuck at memory testing and reboots itself with the default clocks, it doesnt matter how small/big the overclock is, it will still reboot itself.

When the board is not overclocked this doesnt happen though it does take an unusually high amount of time to pass through the memory testing at POST.

The RAM appears to be stable for hours of testing with memtest without a single error as well...

Here is my rig
Gigabyte p35-DQ6 with F6 BIOS
Intel Quad Pro 6600 G0 Stepping
Crucial Ballistix at 1066 MHz 2.2v
Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme + 120mm fan
Sapphire Radeon HD2400 Pro fanless
850w OCZ power supply.

I feel really bad about this, everything seems to be stable and then at cold boot its giving me this stupid issue

How many hours of memtest and how many instances of it are you running? Are you getting complete coverage of your RAM? If I remember correctly each instance of memtest can only do about 600MB of RAM.

Can you run more than one instance of memtest? Its just a bootable CD that starts running on its own, i just changed one of the setting to allow for it check all the RAM supposingly...
It went on for around 4 hours before stopping it myself, the RAM itself is not overclocked and is run at stock settings and volts as well.

Any tips on how to get it to run with more instances? Or to how to make utilise all of my 2GB of RAM?

If it was the RAM shouldnt it present problems even when my rig is not overclocked?

hmm... doesn't sound like the memtest I know and love. Sounds like a better one though.

Just a silly question but are you running the full 2.2v through the RAM?

Also have you set the memory timings manually?

Yeah, i changed the voltage to +4... and run the timings manually to 5-5-5-15 which is the default for my RAM.

http://www.memtest.org/

thats the memtest i am using.

Would it help to reset my CMOS? Or would it be a waste of time? And how should i do that? whats the best way? Do you believe its a RAM issue or a motherboard one?

Yes... I flashed it to the latest hoping to resolve the issue but it didnt...

The thing is it DOES overclock after it reboots, and it is stable at that too! Thats why i cant understand whats wrong with it...

I'd hazzard a guess at the PSU. If you have access to a mate's PSU give that a go. All I can think of is replacing each component in turn until the culpret is found.

Something you could try is to overclock with only 1 stick of RAM. Some boards get funny if you have all 4 slots filled.

I think i have found a solution to the problem...

I tried to open my case and test each RAM module as you suggested, having removed all peripheral devices leaving only the keyboard and mouse and the VGA on.
Both sticks worked perfectly alone, i then tried them on together again and once again they booted immeditaley, no memory testing **** at all.

I decided to test it further on by overclocking and shutting it down cold, again it booted up normally.

When i connected all my devices the cold boot issue appeared again, i think it originates from my USB hard drive, it doesnt happen when the hard drive is not connected...

Anyway, hope it doesnt appear again, thanks for your help Chris Beard :)
