Weird phone story.

So, my missus lost her phone about 6 weeks ago on the train. SIM was blocked. New phone ordered, job done.

Then I got a phone call from my GF's mum who said that someone phoned her saying that they found the phone and were going to drop it into the police. Apparently he found it on the train and only just got around to trying to return it - 6 weeks later. He's very vague about when he found it and what station he was going to hand it in to.

Then he phoned up again on my GF home number but hung up straight away when he heard a familiar voice. Things seems a bit strange so I got called with this story.

Literally 10 minutes later, I get a call from this guy saying the same thing. He said that he needed to give a name for the Police when he handed it in. I know this isn't true. So, I said you can hand it in under my name and then gave my collar number to him so they could contact me. He rather promptly ended the conversation and hung up.

So it seems he's working down the contact list, but isn't actually asking for anything. What do you think he's after? This all seems very strange.

It is very strange. Wish I could help, but I don't know.

However, if you blocked the sim, how is he still using the phone? Or is he using a different sim with the same phone? Why not tell the police, trace the call and find his location?

The phone is blocked and he's called from a withheld number. He's not actually done anything wrong so a trace wouldn't be authorised.

If your contacts are saved to the phone and not the sim card maybe the guy has somehow managed to access your g/f's contacts. I've no idea why he is calling everyone on the list however??

edit: maybe he thinks if he gets a name he'll be able to get the phone reactivated?

Yeah, I think the contacts are on the phone.

He might have tried to do something with the phone that required the owners name for whatever reason, like getting it replaced by a phone company or un-blacklisted etc.

Security questions? etc? Might be asking a few different people some different questions, enough to get past security.

I hope your GF doesn't associate with stupid people, you never know how much detail one of them is going to leak.

Edit:
If he tried to get my mother's maiden name, that'd be useless - it's the same as her married one ;)

Rural arrangement? You're not from up Milbrook way, are you? Or Shirley, Northam, Sholing, Thornhill? There's some weird places in Soton if you stray off the Swaythling to Town Quay leyline.

:D

I would have thought having someone elses property for six weeks without returning it would be regarded as a theft.

Is there enough info on the phone for ID theft? or do you think he might be thinking of stalking her?
