I had hoped this mystery could be solved in the Random Image thread meaning I wouldn't need make a separate thread but this is bugging myself and the friend who's picture it is.

Is that a camera gremlin/bug? Or are there two sets of twins wearing and holding the same thing? My friend's stepfather took the picture on my friend's HTC One M8, I have cropped it but we assume it was taken in a normal mode and not panoramic as the picture looks like a normal picture in his gallery.

EDIT - I assume it is some camera blip but can someone explain how? I thought with digital photography, something like this would leave a ghosting effect and only happen if there was a slow shutter speed.

yeah I'd say it's a panoramic photo made from multiple shots, the 'twins' are due to the time laps between photo's and the stitching in the program.

Having said that doesn't the m8 have some sort of 'multi shot' feature where it takes the best parts of a picture and sticks it together... it might be that as another option

It's as a result off he software stitching as you pan, it's not a ghosting effect because images are not stacked but stitched side by side, and it just so happens the cut of the 2 has the people in it twice.

My bad. The guy who took isn't technically gifted, neither is the owner of the phone as I did ask him was it a panoramic which he assured me it was not (I guess he doesn't know how to tell). Ignore and delete.

Its a panoramic where you take a number of pictures side by side and they are stitched together. Which is different to how some digital cameras do it by taking a sweeping 'movie' and then cutting together the frames.

It would have been taken left to right with 2 separate images each with those guys waking in them.

Alternatively you can get the same phenomenon if the camera is in HDR mode as it takes two or more exposures and overlays them to give you correctly exposed highlights and shadows.

Not sure why someone would think something like this is weird as it's easily explained.

You can also abuse this for comedy effect.

Start taking a panorama, get your subject to run behind you once you've "captured" them initially. Get them to stand in a part of the shot you've yet to capture and they will appear twice in the final stitched shot. Second comedy pose optional.

I think you've taken the first picture of a parallel universe that's intersecting ours at a weak point in the fabric of our universe.

Or panoramic photo but that sound ridiculous.

No way is that a panorama showing the same people twice. The two guys on the right are clearly taller than the ones on the left - people are just being fooled because they appear to be wearing similar clothing.

I can't comment for digital photography, but with 35mm, you could take a 2nd exposure before rolling the film on while keeping the camera very still / on a tripod. Examples of end result were someone being in 2 places like in the OP's photo, or someone moving their arms to make it appear like they had 4 arms etc.

Doppelgangers.

doppelganger
Someone that looks the exact same as another person. yet not a twin. ghost identical to living person: an apparition in the form of a double of a living person
yo i saw someone that looked just like u...could have been your doppelganger
