Weird Problem

Hello,

I recently bought some parts from Overclockers and assembled the build. The parts where...

Intel Core 2 Quad Pro Q6600 "LGA775 Kentsfield" 2.40GHz (1066FSB) - Retail
Abit IP35 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
OCZ 4GB (2 x 2GB) PC2-6400C5 Dual Channel Vista Gold Series DDR2 (OCZ2G8004GK)
BFG GeForce 8800 GTS OC 640MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail
Western Digital Caviar SE16 500GB 5000AAKS SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM
Antec Nine Hundred Ultimate Gaming Case
Corsair HX 620W ATX2.2 Modular SLI Compliant PSU (CMPSU-620HXUK)
Creative X-Fi Xtreme Gamer 7.1 Soundcard - Retail
Enermax Aurora Brushed Aluminium Keyboard - Black

I assembled the PC fine. However, I am having a weird problem with it. When I turn the PC on it comes on for about three seconds, during which it does not output a signal to the monitor. After three seconds it turns itself off (completely off, as the fans stop spinning), and then three seconds or so later it turns itself back on again...and works perfectly from there on.

Exactly the same thing happens if you press the reset switch on the computer, or when you exit the BIOS (which reboots the PC). However, I found that if you restart using the restart button from within the Windows start menu itself the computer restarts normally and as it should.

I am completely confused as to what the problem could be. I got a really good PSU so this type of thing would not happen.

Can anyone help me out please?

Try updating the BIOS, I know the first revision of the 965P-DS3 had this 'problem' from a Hard boot. If it was a soft reset, there was no problem.

It has the latest BIOS already. The one that was released on 24/05/2007.

:(

Build a system for a friend using the same Abit IP-35 motherboard. Same thing, cold boot's take a 'double take'. Everything else is perfect though.

Personally I was wondering if the Abit is defaulting to the 1333 strap, and because the Q6600's are 1066 strap, its gotta reset the strap. I know some 975's did the power on/off trick when changing straps.

Doesnt bother the guy I built it for though as the rig is stable, and nicely quick.

Thanks for the replies. So if I get a different motherboard will the problem most likely go away?
If the board is the problem then yes..... if not then no.....

my Asus P5k SE does exactly the same, so it cant just be the Abit board

is it a coincidence that this start stop problem only appeared after i set my Geil 6400 2gb kit to run at proper speeds (4-4-4-12), rather than at 5-5-5-15 that it gave me on Auto ?
