Don't suppose microsoft still do the free 64 bit upgrade do they? can't find it if they do

They'll send you the dvd for the price of postage, it is on the windows site somewhere.

noones bios ever shows more than 4gb ram?

The bios in my system can register up to 8GB ram without any problems. Although I wonder if it would register 3.xx GB if I installed a 32bit CPU like an older Pentium 4 instead of the Core 2 Duo that I have.

Any motherboard that supports 64bit CPU's should be able to correctly identify how much memory is installed, although there can be memory remap options which can affect things.
