Weird ROUTE problem?

Hi,

Basically I have a very strange route problem.

We need to add a route to a specific range and if I do this on Windows Vista it works fine. However, on Windows 2000 and XP, it fails.

Any ideas? Is there an update route for Windows 2000/XP perhaps?

route add 172.30.174.0 mask 255.255.255.0 172 21.5.100

The route fails with error message:

The route addition failed. Either the interface index is wrong or the gateway does not lie on the same network as the interface. Check the IP address table for this machine.

With Vista using exactly the same command it works fine.

The gateway is reachable and pingable. It works on Vista but not XP / 2000.

I might try and get around it by doing the routing on the router rather than on the PC's. Might be easier.
